History
The name “Lorton” came from a village in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, in England when Joseph Plaskett settled in Fairfax County. The man ran a general store and opened the Lorton Valley Post Office on November 11, 1875.
Before Lorton had become the commercial center in Fairfax County, originally, it was Colchester and the spiritual and historical center of the community which was Pohick Church. This was the church that George Washington and George Mason were at times part of the vestry.
