There are tons of historical places you can visit in Alexandria, Virginia. Established in 1748, this was the home of the first president of the United States, President George Washington. If you’re visiting the city, just to get a glimpse of the country’s history, you’re definitely in for an exciting adventure. 


You can visit all the parks, buildings, and museums that have been in the city for decades and have shaped the way the city is today. 


One of the places you can visit when you go to Alexandria is Jones Point Park. 


Jones Point is known as the geographic point on the Potomac River within Old Town Alexandria. It’s known as a critical piece of the city’s history as it is one of the largest centers for shipping, manufacturing, and transportation. The lighthouse found in Jones Park was built in 1855 and is the last remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia.


What You Should Know About Jones Point Lighthouse


The lighthouse found in Jones Point Park is a small one-story house with a lantern on top which served primarily as a warning light for naval ships that were approaching Washington Navy Yard. However, the lighthouse’s operations were discontinued in 1926 and were instead replaced by a small skeletal tower nearby. Ten years of its use, the smaller tower was discontinued as well.

When you visit Jones Point Park you can see a gravel interpretive trail that explains the human and natural history behind Jones Point Park. There’s also an exhibit that highlight’s the area’s freshwater marsh habitat that was used by the Native Americans and its role in navigation and shipbuilding. 


Visitors can also use the two fishing piers to fish for American catfish, rock bass, and eels. 

 

There are also spaces for recreation in Jones Point Park, which include two playgrounds and two basketball courts. 


What Are the Rules and Regulations When Visiting Jones Point Park in Alexandria, VA?


  1. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash and are no more than six feet long. Pet owners must also dispose of the animal’s waste in a trash can. There are no off-leash areas within the park.
  2. Swimming and wading are NOT permitted in the Potomac River. 
  3. The canoe or kayak launch can only be used for the launch and recovery of canoes and kayaks. Visitors are not allowed to dock boats in the canoe launch.
  4. You need a permit for any commercial activities and activities organized by groups. 
  5. Fishin will only be permitted with the appropriate license.
